One child was killed and 12 others were injured Friday morning in a crash on northbound U.S. Highway 71 near Highway 150. Grandview police said nine ambulances and an air ambulance were called to the scene at about 10:15 a.m. when an SUV and a passenger van collided. The driver of the van lost control, hit the center concrete barrier and rolled over. There were 13 people in the van. Authorities said some of them weren't wearing seat belts. "Several people were ejected; several people were trapped," said Rusty James, an incident manager with Kansas City Scout. An adult and child were ejected during the crash. The child landed into oncoming traffic and later died. "The child was found in the southbound lanes of 71 Highway across the barrier wall," James said. Others in the van were trapped. Rescuers cut through, ripping the top off the van to get to those inside. Officials said of the injured, two are in serious condition, four are in critical condition and six were treated and released. Debris including suitcases and clothing littered the road. KMBC's Dan Weinbaum reported that the van, with a Wisconsin license plate, was carrying members of a religious order, possibly Amish or Mennonite. Officials said those in the van are believed to be from the Tomah area of Wisconsin.
