Jean Richafort (1480-c.1547) - De mon triste desplaisir University of Maryland Collegium Musicum Michael Holmes, director with Jay White, countertenor soloist Images include: Henry VIII and his wives, the Tower of London, Notre Dame de Paris, and Saint-Chapelle de Paris French text: De mon triste desplaisir A vous, belle, je m'y complains, Car vous traictes mal mon desir, Si durement que je m'y plains. Entre vos mains Souffre maulx mains Sans nul confort. Dont sur ma foy, Comme aperçoy, Vous avez tort. English translation: On my sorrowful displeasure, To you, fair one, I there complain, For you treated my longing badly, So harshly that I am sorry for it. At your hands I suffer many mischiefs Without any comfort. Thus by my faith, As I see it, You are mistaken. About the group: The Collegium Musicum is the primary ensemble at the University of Maryland to concentrate on the performance of early music. The ensemble combines the preparation of high-quality concerts with research and in-class discussion of numerous performance practice issues relating to music from the Middle Ages through the Baroque era (ca. 1000-1750). The vast majority of the ensemble's repertoire is drawn from the music of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance (ca. 1200-1600). The Collegium is very often split into several smaller ensembles, which rehearse separately. These include the UMD Viol Consort, the UMD Early Wind Consort (recorders, shawms, crumhorns, sackbuts, cornets, and curtals), the UMD Early Brass Ensemble, and the Collegium Choir. At the end of each semester, all of the smaller ensembles join together to rehearse and perform with the full ensemble. The UMD Collegium and the School of Music own a large collection of historical instruments, including several recorders, crumhorns, sackbuts, cornets, shawms, curtals, viols, rebecs, a hurdy gurdy, harpsichords, a positive organ, a pianoforte, and baroque bows for stringed instruments. The students very often learn how to play these instruments for the first time in the Collegium, but satisfactory musicianship is a prerequisite. The ensemble has traditionally consisted of both UMD students and more experienced early music performers from the Washington D.C. community. The UMD students are required to register for the Collegium Musicum as a course, and they receive a syllabus with a rehearsal and concert schedule, a list of readings, and other required activities and assignments. The assignments greatly improve their understanding of early music in general as well as of the compositions they perform. Like many collegiate early music ensembles at other universities, the UMD Collegium maintains close ties with the musicology division of the School of Music. At the same time, it draws upon the vast talent of the school's performance area. Past directors of the UMD Collegium have included Edward Roesner, Richard Wexler, Stuart Cheney, Tom Zajac, Michael Holmes, Michael O'Connor, and Philip Cave.
