Paphos News, July 25th, 2008 Hermes Under Fire The International Airline Carriers Association has criticised Paphos and Larnaca airport operator, Hermes, over proposed 9% fee increases to carriers in 2009, making Cyprus an even more expensive destination. Meanwhile, from tomorrow all EU airports are obliged to provide free wheel chairs and guide dogs to elderly and disabled passengers. Pentalia Protest Residents from Pentalia protested in Paphos today against the government forbidding their return to their evacuated village. Residents were moved out over subsidence worries and re-housed nearby at state expense. But some want the right to rent out their new homes and move back to Pentalia. Paphos Mall Expected to make a major contribution to the Paphos economy, The Paphos Mall opens tomorrow on Demokratias Avenue. The €22m shopping centre houses well know retail outfits, including Orphanides supermarket, in 30 000 square metres of shopping centre. Polis Road Demonstration Polis are residents are invited to take part in a protest against the delay in building the Paphos to Polis road, vital for the local tourists industry. The demonstration is at 8 o'clock tomorrow morning on Marion Avenue, at a time President Christofias will be passing through en-route to an official function. Talk Date Launched President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat announced the start of fully fledged negotiations on the Cyprus problem after their fourth meeting this morning. Meanwhile, recently appointed Special Adviser of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, is expected to arrive on Sunday for briefing. Illegal Immigration The government has assured the EU that it will make full use of bloc solidarity funds to control illegal immigration and better border management.
