On June 4, 1989, the Chinese Government committed one of the greatest atrocities in human history—the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Thousands of peaceful student demonstrators, many of China's best and brightest, were literally doused with gasoline and set on fire, and then crushed to death with military tanks. These university students had gathered peacefully, in the spirit of true harmony closely resembling the 1960s free speech movement here in the US, with a hope of bringing about human rights and democracy in China. They built a beautiful Goddess of Liberty and Freedom that stood 33 feet tall, and closely resembled the Statue of Liberty—a global symbol of democracy. The students believed that in mass numbers, their voices would be heard. Instead, counter to human nature, their own government crushed the movement, and in an heinous act of unspeakable horror, drove over hundreds of young adults with tanks. Those students who were not unspeakably crushed to death were rounded up and imprisoned. Many of these freedom fighters remain behind bars in China today. Their only crime was to take a stand for freedom and justice in a country that disregards basic human rights in favor of a regime that has yet to evolve and make amends for its past wrongs. China continues to use oppressive tactics towards its own people and the Tibetans—hundreds have been killed since March 10, 2008, and more than 5000 Tibetans have been rounded up and detained and/or have disappeared. China promised the world to improve its human rights record before the start of the Beijing Olympics. It is time for China to admit its wrongdoing and to ask for help in order to bring about a civilization of peace not only in China, but throughout the world. One world—one dream—free Tibet now. This clip was shot on April 8, 2008 at the San Francisco Tibetan Freedom Demonstration.
