http://www.ted.com Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: One morning, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened -- as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one, speech, movement, understanding -- she studied and remembered every moment. This is a powerful story about how our brains define us and connect us to the world and to one another.

Jul 15, 2008 - absolutely amazing. and so moving. all power to you Jill with your potent, timely message. for those interested, she has a book out called, I believe, 'my stroke of insight'.

lovesarita Says:

Jul 15, 2008 - people I know who trained with Brandon say her ego is very much alive and well! that she had a taste of enlightenment (a 'satori') but not a lasting awakening. Which isn't to say she isn't doing great work - she is - but awakened into God consciousness? I don't know. Byron Katie's a better place to look!

cameronpflegg Says:

Jul 15, 2008 - What a load of new age crap! No science behind this rubbish. No explanation of why things were happening just hippie crap. This is as lame as being called to the light when you have a near death experience.

Ayinde2853 Says:

Jul 16, 2008 - She said the left brain is responsible for us making the I am distinction in our realities. If she really lost that, there's no way she could have experienced peace in her self because there would have been no self to say ' I experienced peace.' We are a duality of distinction and connection. We are individual and collective. Because we are both - we can experience the peace she speaks of. Nirvana is a description that eliminates the self - and hinders our peace.

UcanbeGOD Says:

Jul 16, 2008 - Why is it hippie crap? You honestly think that we aren't all connected? She did explain why it was happening. Everybody loves to bash someone for thinking we should be good too each other even though there is a common ground between all things and there is scientific proof for it. Many people claim this same idea for reasons less scientific and you bash this?!?!?!

Lethah Says:

Jul 16, 2008 - She is very generous and strong to share this experience with us, far ahead of how we normally understand the brain, our lives, and our place in the world.

killlerkan08 Says:

Jul 17, 2008 - i think we all know what happened here. Here uncle did "things"

derk2 Says:

Jul 17, 2008 - she made it sound like having a stroke was a gift and a curse, i'd rather not experience nirvana in a life or death situation. I'd rather would like to choose between the the squabble and reasoning of the natural world that's projected by the left lobe of the brain and the energetic harmony that is projected by the right freely. but maybe that's why they're linked so that we can experience them both and not lose ourselves to one side because too much of one is likely to consume and detach you

reivilo Says:

Jul 18, 2008 - why do people with this experience (either through trauma or meditation) alway raise their arms like that? an instinct or spiritual recollection?

happydappyman Says:

Jul 18, 2008 - yes once you got into one side it is likely you would not know to go back to both and so be trapped. not cause you were actually trapped but because you would not know to go back

happydappyman Says:

Jul 18, 2008 - she could probably not have talked to herself or been aware of anything if she lost the left entirely... maybe

happydappyman Says:

Jul 18, 2008 - think how good you could be at math f you temporarely switched to the left side of your brain

Ayinde2853 Says:

Jul 19, 2008 - you understand what i mean then. her left brain - if we accept the way she explaind it - didn't stop functioning. it started working differently. self awareness is not a bad thing but a good thing! and - realizing our connectedness to all that is, that is extremely good as well. We need both.

mesmerxx Says:

Jul 19, 2008 - Yea I wonder too. Looks like a retard whoever does that. I mean WTF. Her arms are not birds wings.

PilferMusic Says:

Jul 20, 2008 - cool

faithm Says:

Jul 21, 2008 - i had a stroke and lost my speech (got it back after surgery). it was... interesting. a nurse asked if i was "retarded" or "special" or something, hah. i couldn't speak but i could understand language.

Hyperbulle Says:

Jul 23, 2008 - ookayy.... So everything humanity has to do in order to go to nirvana/achieve world peace is to induce haemorrhages in our left hemispheres. Sadly, this seems more like new age than neuro-science. But from a scientific point of view, it is still interesting to hear about her experience.

crazymentalpatient Says:

Jul 23, 2008 - that is disgusting. I hope you put in a complaint about her. How dare she.

faithm Says:

Jul 23, 2008 - ah, we weren't offended, just shocked. they needed to know if i was really having a stroke or if i was normally like that. my dad just kind of burst into the emergency room. there's not really a graceful way to ask, ya know? I didn't offend me at all. It's easy to understand. I'd rather them ask than assume! my face was limp on one side and i spoke badly, i lost my speech center.

stormyandcold Says:

Jul 23, 2008 - Drugs like lsd can create a similar feeling of Nirvana without the loss of functions in the body. It's the point where you experience yourself differently and in new angles of self realisation able to cause immense peace within yourself (providing you have a good trip) and exagerrated spacial awareness. Great vid and insight!

dare2baware Says:

Jul 24, 2008 - There is such a BIG message in this video. I have posted it on my BLOG. Thank you!
