The verse in question is 4:34 of the Quran. The word used for beat is 'daraba' and it also means 'to go away' as also used elsewhere in the Quran. "O ye who believe! When ye go abroad (darabtum) In the cause of Allah..." (Quran, 4:94) What the Quran says: "O ye who believe! Ye are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should ye treat them with harshness, that ye may take away part of the dower [money given by the husband to the wife for the marriage contract] ye have given them, except where they have been guilty of open lewdness; on the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If ye take a dislike to them it may be that ye dislike a thing, and God brings about through it a great deal of good". (Quran, 4:19) After you divorce your wife and she completes the (prescribed) term, then either hold her back (in wedlock) amicably or let her leave honorably. Do not hold her in order to hurt (or harass) her, else you would transgress (the bounds of Allah). Whoever does that commits an outrage upon himself. Do not take the laws of Allah as a jest (or treat them frivolously). Remember the favors of Allah upon you, and the scriptures and the wisdom He has revealed to you. It instructs you (towards the right path). So, be (devoted and) dutiful towards Allah and be sure that indeed Allah knows every single thing! (Quran, 2:231) What the Prophet said: Narrated Mu'awiyah al-Qushayri (a disciple/companion of the Prophet): "I went to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) and asked him: What do you say (command) about our wives? He replied: Give them food what you have for yourself, and clothe them by which you clothe yourself, and do not beat them, and do not revile them. (Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 11, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Number 2139)" There is no beating whatsoever!

May 17, 2008 - All translation of Quran of verse 4.34 says 'beat your wife'. All Islamic scholars of all jurisprudence agrees and preaches that verse 4.34 Allah allows man to beat his wife.

But all translations of Quran, all tafsir and all Islamic scholars says that beating wife is a command from Allah in verse 4.34. Like I said if you disagree, it only means you have good intentions.

To put it in a nut shell, any researcher can give opinion only after reading the whole book and not can cherry pick one ayah. My sincere suggestion for every one seeking the truth is to read this last testament of Allah and write down all the verses about women in a note book. The only result the reader will get is about respecting women.
