May 16, 2008 - The purpose of regular hurdles which are only 42" high for men and 33" high for women, are to clear the hurdles with the least amount of clearance without knocking them over so the hurdler can maintain his fast pace, but on the ultra high hurdles, the purpose is to jump as high as possible so the hurdler can develop a good one legged jump (the Fosbury flop) for the high jump competition.
