may 10, 08. recorded motion ensemble performance of new composition by ian crutchley, with visuals by me. i have superimposed my animation in the corner, as my capture was what it was... on a small and cheap camera. it's a retelling in four parts of chapter four of pinocchio. there are long boring looped portions at the beginning of section. the action starts at 4:32 the scrolling text (which will no doubt be rendered illegible by the time youtube is done with the compression) is thusly: Pinocchio, Part IV: The Cricket Synopsis Pinocchio's early life is a breathtaking journey from one tree to another: cut from one tree at birth, his adventures so far find him hanging near death from another tree, swinging in the wind. Chased by robbers, he has hidden his coins in his mouth. The robbers have hanged him, hoping to retrieve the money from his corpse later. As he swings, edging ever closer to death, he reflects on his life so far. "My birth was nearly the death of me," he thinks, recalling the savage way Mr. Cherry and Geppetto sawed, hacked and carved him into the form of a boy. "Perhaps my death will be my birth." There are questions to be answered: How was I able to speak when I was just a stick of wood? Is Geppetto my father? Or was there someone else? How did the members of The Grand Puppet Theatre know my name? Am I famous? Who was the little girl with blue hair? What really happened with The Cricket? He remembers the scene several different ways, never being sure which one was real... PART1 The Box "Cricket was good, but was always nagging me. I made a little box to put her in until she stopped, but sometimes she would keep at it night and day. Once, when I looked back in the box, she was gone." PART2 Lullabies "I was always troubled by nagging questions of my existence. To soothe me Mr. Cricket would sing answers to me. So beautiful!" PART3 The Cricket Dies "He wouldn't shut up with his unwanted advice. He was mean and I couldn't take it so I threw Geppetto's mallet at him and..." PART4 Celestial Bodies "The cricket and I were friends. He used to sing me this song about wishes and stars, really wacky stuff. It always ended with him asking for money, but I didn't mind, even though I knew where he would spend it."
