Episode 06, Season 1. "Dog Day Afternoon": (3/31/86) Pt. 3 The family is divided on whether to put their sickly old dog to sleep. Mr. Slauson: Al Fann. (Anyone else notice that "Valerie's Family" seemed more torn up about the dog dying than they did when "Valerie" died?) *SPECIAL NOTE* This is NOT from an original NBC airing but it is the full UNEDITED episode. About 15 years ago, a local station (Channel 11) in the Boston area aired episodes of the series in unedited form for about a month and I was fortunate to get a few episodes recorded that I didn't have in my collection. The episodes they aired were voted upon by viewers (I did not participate in the voting unfortunately). As a result, the eps were not aired in any sensible order, although to my delight most episodes that were chosen were the "Valerie" episodes. But it was odd that one day they'd show a "Sandy" episode where Valerie was deceased and then the next day Valerie would appear alive and well. To make matters worse, there was never any write up about which episode was airing so it was hit or miss a couple of times. Often they'd show an episode I already had. Also, they used the abbreviated theme song, which I despise with a passion. I understand their reasoning for doing so however. Small stations need to edit shows so that they can fit more commercials to sponsor their station and keep it afloat. Channel 11 figured it'd be better to split up the theme song and leave the actual episode uncut instead of butchering the episode itself. So I forgive them for doing that, for what it's worth. In any case, I'm shoehorning the full theme from the Pilot episode of "Valerie" in place of the syndicated cut version of Season 1's theme. The drawback is that the pilot theme did not have Christine Ebersole included, so she's left out here. I hope this doesn't impede anyone's enjoyment of the episode.

May 17, 2008 - Indeed, but the branch of Channel 11 that had viewers voting on what "Valerie"/"Hogan Family" was to air took place in Boston. I don't know the specifics since it was about 15+ years ago but it may have been Channel 11 was looking to expand out of the NY area. Again, I don't know. I'm just grateful I caught the unedited episodes that I didn't have in my collection since it looks like we're a long way off from having a DVD release of the show.

May 17, 2008 - This was the last filmed episode of season 1 and to this day, I always get teary eyed watching the final scene. Truly wonderful writing and acting here. Ed, I have a question for you. I know its been 15 years since you recorded this from Channel 11, but I am curious about why the executive producer credits didn't show up at the end of the episode until after it faded to black. It is so interesting to see your S1 unedited versions to my S1 syndicated versions-the only ones I've ever seen.

May 17, 2008 - I know what you mean about being thrilled to find a station airing episodes uncut (with the unfortunate exception of the opening credits). I have all of S2 unedited and a good number of episodes from the Sandy years that aired at the station I work at that I recorded in the early 90s. I have almost every line of every episode I have on tape memorized - so watching your uncut episodes for the first time are like watching it for the first time. :-)

May 17, 2008 - I have no idea why they did the producer credits that way. I think it's a tad irksome & one episode from Channel 11 (I think it's "Babes in the Woods") I left off the credits by accident since I didn't press pause in time (when I was recording the episode off of TV 15+ years ago). It's a small glitch that I'm willing to live with. Hey, any idea as to when/if we'll ever see a DVD release of the show? If so, I hope they're Season sets & not a Best of, although I'll take anything at this point.

May 31, 2008 - They had the Executive Producer credits come in after the fading to black b/c they wanted to pay final respects to Murray the Dog in this episode. They did the same thing at the end of another S1 1986 Miller-Boyett show in "Perfect Strangers" when Mark Linn-Baker's dad died. They have the producer credits come in from fading to black b/c they usually pay tributes to someone.

May 31, 2008 - All of my episodes that I acquired through Channel 11 do the Executive Producer credits this way. ClassicTVChazz noticed this in other episodes that I've posted & asked accordingly. I don't think the dog died in real life. I think they decided early on that there was no need to have him. Often when shows start, changes are made once they see what works & what doesn't. Maybe they thought the dog was unnecessary & decided to kill him off to provide a plot for an episode. That's my guess...
