Sharon Dee Ekhaya is an Afro Soul album of the highest quality. A fresh offering from one of South Africa's old school singing gems, Ekhaya celebrates the coming of age of the magnificent female vocalist Sharon Dee, and places her firmly back in the spotlight after a significant musical sabbatical 'Local is lekker'. A colossal anthem in the 90's, elevated the young Sharon Dee to household status overnight and introduced her to her adoring public through township bashes and street parties. It was a track that could be heard pouring from taxis and rocking the shebeens and it brought a sense of patriotism and loyalty to the listener that would change the face of local music. Sharon, still finding her feet in the music world, was geared for commercial success. The public expected a big pop career for the young singer yet she chose a different path, opting to pursue her love for gospel music. Sharon joined multi-award winning Gospel group Joyous Celebration. Sharon eventually immigrated to the UK where she furthered her love of music through performance and study. She took a large role in the phenomenal Lion King and spent 9 months in the limelight of the big stage. After 6 years away she finally returned to South Africa, married, with two sons, who are now aged 9 and 3. A strong, determined woman, Sharon successfully juggles motherhood and marriage with her re-emerging singing career. "Motherhood is half the reason I took such a long break from music," she says, "I wanted to make sure I did it right. In the beginning I just stayed at home and looked after the kids to give them all my attention". Juggling homework with her eldest son whilst performing gigs is a trying task but Sharon seems to be coping well. "I have family in Durban and Johannesburg so there is always help when I'm on the road. I also have a wonderful housekeeper who is part of the family." A woman born to perform, Sharon has been suitably impressed by the Afro-divas emerging in the music scene and feels a connection to the music of Simphiwe Dana and Thandiswa. Also belonging to the Gallo stable, Sharon recently re-signed with Gallo, her record company of choice back in the day and set her plans in motion to record a strong Afro-soul album. The results are magnificent. Strong and soulful, Sharon's voice is more refined than ever. She radiates a mature sensuality that draws the listener in through her emotional lyrics and flowing melodies. Utilising her African roots as a base for her language bed, she is as comfortable singing in Zulu as she is singing in TshiVenda or English. A true world music album, Ekhaya, which means 'going back home', is a powerful offering from the star that the music industry has sorely missed. Welcome back Sharon!
