My name is Chinchi (originally Charley); I grew up in a pet store. The people who worked in the pet store always told me I was the cutest chinchilla ever. Everyday the store associates would take me out, cuddle me, hold me, and even let me run around - thus I became hand tame at a very young age. There were times when I would run up and down end-cap shelves and other times I would work the over stock in the back room.
My favorite place at the pet store were the registers. At the registers, I would leap from till to till, stand still as a statue, and hide away in my secret hideout. The sales associates always kept a close eye on me making sure I was safe.
One day while living at the pet store, the store manager noticed I was losing the hair near my butt. The manager took me to the vet where I was tested for ringworm. The vet told us the test results would take a while and I would need to be put in the back room until everything was sorted out. About a week later, our worse fears came true -- I had ringworm.
The vet called us to schedule an appointment. A few days later the manager took me in and the vet shaved my butt and the side of my body. The vet gave the store manager some Lamisil cream that would kill the ringworm and heal me back to normal. Furthermore, the vet told everyone not to handle me unless I was getting my medicine.
For about eight weeks, I was kept in the back room. The store associates would stop by and talk to me from time to time, but I missed running at the registers, being held, playing in the plush doggy toys, and being cuddled. Every-time a hand came near me, it was to put that nasty stinging Lamisil cream on me. Sometimes I would bark to scare those hands away!
After the eight weeks had past, the tests came back negative. I was clear of my ringworm but still kept in the back room. The store manager then pushed for my adoption, because I had two major shave marks. Two weeks later the store manager succeeded and I was adopted out to one of the associates.
It took a few days to get acquainted with my new home. I already knew who my dad was when he took me, because again, he was (and still is) one of the sales associates at the pet store. He took me to his house along with my huge glass cage and all my toys. At first, it was a little confusing but having my cage was nice because I at least I knew I was protected from the inside.
Slowly, and over a gradual period of time, I began to recognize my surroundings. It took me a good month to get adjusted but once I was, I couldn't wait to get out of my cage! Everyday up unti lnow my dad tells me he loves me and that I'm family. He also tells me family is forever and that he will always love me.
We (my dad and I) have great fun: we watch movies, watch other chinchillas on youtube, build forts out of pillows and blankets, I meet his friends, and he cuddles me. Often times, I'll fold laundry with him -- although I do get the feeling I distract him sometimes because my way of helping is sitting in the middle of all his clothes.
My favorite time of the day with my dad is treat time. Whenever he says, "Treat time!" I come running to him. He only gives me a little peace of dried fruit -- dad says it might give me a stomach ache if he gives me too much. My favorite treats are dried pineapple, dried blueberries, or dried cranberries.
My dad likes to take me to work with him when he can for a short visit. I enjoy seeing all the associates who took care of me during my ringworm and everyone who use to play with me outside of my cage. Every night my dad holds me close to his chin for about 10 minutes. He then kisses me on my head and goes to bed.
